Let's Make a Sense Poem

Harm Reduction Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) conference. One of our speakers mentioned "harm reduction" as a means of negotiating behaviors. In public health, the Harm Reduction model reduces the harm of drug use without requiring abstinence. Light Bulb Moment! What if we apply this idea to good health, in general? How can we increase our good health practices without demanding perfection? Here I created a sense poem about the small decisions I can make to improve my health. Please create your own simile for the small decisions in your life that lead toward better health. (Try using one of the five senses!)

  1. Dr. Stoner and Karen,
I had never seen this poem -quite powerful. I work with pregnant women who are substance using and abusing, consequently harm reduction and abstinence is our mantra as well. Being pregnant puts a different spin on it, but it's all the same; our health, mental health, and caring about ourselves to make these life style behaviors.
Thanks for your thoughtful perspectives, Karen.
